On Bonds...

Congrats are due to Barry Bonds for #756. We'll never know if he cheated or how much his cheating affected his career HR total (although we guess the effect was significant). Hitting that many HRs is tough, and we'll admit that Bonds is one of the best baseball players in the game's history.

That's about all the positive we can say for Barry, because we don't like him very much. He's an ass. We're saddened that one of the game's biggest jerks holding what is arguably the most prestigious record in all of sports. Moreover he took it over from one of the game's best sports figures. That Bonds took over the record in a loss to the Nationals is somewhat symbolic of what this chase has done to the Giants.

There really is, however, one overarching reason why we will villify Bonds until his record falls. We probably could have handled the cheating. It sucks that he's a jerk, but people will forget that over time. No, we don't like Bonds because of what he has done to us. As soon as he is out of pinstripes, Alex Rodriguez will become our favorite ballplayer (outside of the Cards and Bo Sox). No matter where he signs in 2008, we will cheer for A-rod, and that sucks. So, here's to A-rod's home run chase sometime in 2015...we're counting down the days.

The excessive trashing of Bonds that has taken place over the last few weeks is little more than attempt to place the blame for what we don't like about the last 20 years of baseball on one person. It's an incredibily deceitful and hyprocritical stance. When Bonds leaves, the problem leaves with him, eh? That is b.s. and everyone knows it. Was McGwire vilified this much when he was obviously juicing and breaking Maris' record? Of course not, because it wasn't fashionable to do so. If you want to blame somebody, blame yourself for financially supporting a league that was willing and continues to be willing to do whatever it takes to increase revenue, including turning a blind eye to performance-enhancing substances and endorsing the marketing-friendly concept of individualism over team work. Otherwise, shut the hell up, give the man his due, and don't pretend you're so outraged.

That's awfully angry of you, cuz. But you're probably right. I just wish he was a nice guy.

Yup, my beef is that the biggest jerk in sports today holds the most prestigious record in sports. I'm outraged that he's an ass, not so much that he cheated.

well, yeah. He is a jerk. My frustration isn't really directed at you guys but just at the general fact that everybody feels the need to express their inner angst at the fact that barry bonds now has more home runs than hank aaron. I just think the whole thing is ridiculous. Fortunately, college football will soon be upon us, so we can focus on a sport completely free of controversy and questionable ethics.
